Room #1

This room suggests that this room is a girl who neat and organize. I can assume by the princess colorings on her wall that she wants to work with little children in the future. I found it interesting to find college girls who are still into Disney related things and that even though we are no longer kids, we can still enjoy things from our childhood.

P9011156.jpg
Room #2

This room suggests that it belongs to a guy because there are provocative posters on the walls. This room does go against the stereotyped guy’s room because the bed is made and it is not that messy. I also noticed that there is a video game system on his desk which implies that he plays video games in his spare time. I think that most college guys play video games with their friends so I think that this is a good example of a guys room besides the fact that is a bit neater than one would normally think.

Room #3

This room suggests that two girls live in here. To me, it looks like one roommate is neat and the other is messy. I believe the girls in this room are fun people who like to watch movies and listen to music. The posters that fill the blank walls (and there is even one on the ceiling) are a wide verity of things which to me, means that college students can have a taste in different things and be able to show-off what they like with decorations.

Time tables:
Person 1
Time What they did
10:07 Woke up, did morning routine
10:45 Leave for class
11-12:15 Class-History
12:20 Lunch at the commons with a few friends
1:20 Did homework- read a chapter for public speaking and took notes
2:05 Continued homework- studied for the Gateway for Math Concepts 1
3:00 Went on the computer and did a verity of things such as Facebook, YouTube and Tumbler. On Facebook he made a status and since no one “liked” it, he deleted it.
5:30 Went to the football game
9:00 Went to Huskies to buy dinner and brought it back to his room to eat.
9:30 Asked friends for help in math.
10:00 Went on the computer to Facebook and YouTube.
12:30 Got ready for bed and went to sleep.

I think this person has a good balance between work and play. From my own experience I don't think that most college students understand it. I think that with how early in the school year it is, the balance suggests that this person is a sophomore.d

Person 2
Time What they did
7:15 Alarm went off but she pressed snoozed.
7:45 Got up and took a shower.
8:45 Started leaving for class but then she remembered that the class didn’t start until 9:30. She then went back to bed.
9:15 Woke up and left for her History class .
9:30-10:45 In class- History
11-12:15 In class- Chemistry
12:20 Ate lunch at the Commons with friends.
1:30 Went back to dorm and watched T.V.
1:45 A friend came into her room and they socialized then they both visited another person
2:10 Her and her 2 friends went back to her room where they tried fixing her XBOX until 2:40.
3:00 Took a nap.
4:15 Got ready for band.
4:40 Had band practice and the football game. Ate dinner in the middle of the game at Monty’s with a few friends from band.
9:30 Reading a book Malcolm X for Literature and Society.
10:45 Got ready for bed.
11:00 Went to sleep.

This person seems to be into socializing with others. She spent a lot of time watching T.V. and playing video games and talking to other friends. She is however, in an activity which helps her make new friends. She seems, like most college students, likes to sleep as late as possible and take naps throughout the day.

Person 3
Time What they did
6:40 Woke up.
7:05 Ate breakfast in her room.
7:30 Went to class- Exercise and You.

2:30 Woke up from the nap and then went on Facebook.
3:00 Studied notes for Biology of Aging.
4:00 Went on Facebook.
5:00 Ate dinner at the Commons with a few friends.
6:00 Watched the football game.
9:10 Went on Facebook.
10:00 Got ready for bed.
10:30 Went to bed.

This person also seems to have a good balance between work and play. Although she went on the computer for fun a few times, she also got studying done. She also went to the football game even though the game was on a Thursday night. This suggests that she has school spirit like many other college students.

Person 4
Time What they did
9:00 Woke up.
9:30-10:30 A friend came to her room to talk.
10:35 Took a shower.

3:10-5:00 Studied for class- Physics.
5:00-5:45 She texted a friend, checked email, went on Facebook, and took more notes.
5:45-6:30 Ate dinner at the Commons with a friend.
6:35-9:00 Studied for Physics.
10:30 Went to bed.

This person spent most of her day studying compared to the 45 minutes that she spent playing on the computer. I think that this type of person is hard to find.

Person 5
Time What they did
7:00 Got up and did morning routine until 7:45.
7:45 Left for class- Math Concepts 1.
8-9:15 Had class- Math Concepts 1.
9:25 Did homework- read Principle of Teaching.

7:00 Took a shower.
7:20 Watched T.V. and called her mom.
11:30 Got ready for bed.
11:40 Went to sleep.

This is another person who spent most of her day studying. She seems to be well organized because she spent a set amount of time doing each class's homework. She works in the Living Learning Community trying to help others the way she was helped last year.

The CA Office

This room has a desk filled with papers that contains information that is important for the CA's to know because they have to pass that information to the students. This room also has a ton of bulletin boards such as an activity sign up sheet. The activity sheet is for the CA's because it is there job to plan activities for their hallmates.

P9071168.JPG
The Front Desk

This is the front desk where the CA's take turns working desk shifts. All students coming and going out of the dorm hall will past this. On the desk is menus and flyers that pertain to students intrest.

I find it interesting that she went of campus to meet with friends. Usually friendships are made because of convience. I'm glad to know that even when a friend moves off campus, you can make time to hang out with them if when you have work later that night.

  • 1 white boy walks in
  • 3 white boys walk in talking
  • 3 white girls walk in talking

  • 1 white girl has a package and goes to the CA to retrieve it
  • 2 white girls walk in looking like they came from the gym
  • 1 white boy walks out
All of this data suggests that not that many people who come and go past the CA’s caring to say “Hi”. You can also tell by the amount of the girls that walked in and out that Columbia Hall is a mostly girl population. There were also more white students than black however more black than Asian. I was also surprised to see how many students left and came just by themselves. I think that this can be interpreted as in college; you can be self-efficient and do things on your own without other people. However, since I don’t know where these people were going by themselves I can’t make that interpretation accurate because they could have been going to another friend’s room or off to a meeting. I was also wondering if I would get any people dressed to go to a party but it did not seem that way but it could have been that it was too early to go out or because of the town curfew. The CA’s were often friendly with the people who came and went. They answered questions such as the boy wanting to know when the commons closed and the CA told him alternate places to eat. Both CA’s were helpful to those who had packages.

  • 1 white boy walks in
  • 1 white girl and 1 white boy walk out, the girl is dressed up
  • 2 white boys and 1 white girl walks in, the girl is dressed up
When comparing this to Columbia Hall (the dorm I observed last time) Ewell was a lot busier. More people also interacted with the CA’s than Columbia residents did. I chose to observe Ewell because I have heard that Ewell is a very friendly hall. By my comparisons, Ewell residents do seem friendlier to their CA’s than Columbia residents.

3a.

CA #1

Female
Grade: Junior
  1. Years being a CA: 2

  1. Why did you become a CA/What influenced you?
Her CA her freshman year told her to do it and suggested that she should pursue the interview process. She never considered becoming a CA beforehand. The CA pushed her into that direction. The more she thought about it the more she wanted to do it. She wanted to help people and thought it was an easy way to do so.
  1. Do you feel that you have a good communication with you residents? Why do you think that is?
Yes because she tells her residents first hand to come talk to her about anything; “It’s better to have a hypothetical conversation versus being in trouble later”. That conversation can range from books versus partying.
  1. What do you think you gain for being a CA?
More confidence like in speaking terms, “it makes me think on my toes”. She feels like that would help her for her major which is education. “It prepares me for what students can say and remember to double check an answer if I don’t know it myself.”
  1. How do you balance working and school work?
“A lot of times I try to bring my school work to my desk job. Doesn’t mean I get it done but working helps me time mange because I don’t know what’s going happen. Anything can happen in this job.” She tries to get things done earlier than later because “I don’t know what’s going to happen later in the week”.
  1. What is the worst thing about being a CA?
“Getting people in trouble. Just because you don’t want to get people in trouble, you want to help, you still have to enforce the policy at some point you’re going to have to get people in trouble, you’re tied with a contract”
  1. Do you feel that the responsibilities of being a CA hold you back from doing things that other students do like partying?
Yes and no. Most people who are in the job aren’t concerned about that. But if you do want to go out to party or hang with friends you do it more safely. I don’t feel that I missed out. I don’t think about “man I missed out on this” you get paid to stay in the dorm. It’s a job that gets me to do my school work and hang with friends versus going off campus for 7 hours. You get some freedom with the job. It’s a fair trade off.”
  1. Are there any rules that you don’t enforce or are lenient on that you should be? Why is that?
Double checked that this is confidential. “Visitation, a guest is required to sign in guests online” but the CAs don’t even know if they get to see that. She feels that if its ok if a guest comes the roommate has to be okay she feels that she wants to know only for fire drill purposes. She says that she is lenient on quite hours. “During the beginning year as long as you’re not screaming, nose is okay but too much noise is not okay. If talking is not bothering me, I’m going to let it go. There is a line that just can’t be crossed.”

CA #2

Female
Grade: Junior
  1. Years being a CA: 1st semester

  1. Why did you become a CA/What influenced you?
“All my friends were a CA and I wanted to help people, be like a mom.”
  1. Do you feel that you have a good communication with you residents? Why do you think that is?
“Yes because I seem them every day and say hi to them. They always come to my room to hang”
  1. What do you think you gain for being a CA?
“I gain more friends, get to be in more activities, and I gain a pay check. I also gain being there for people, getting close with other CA’s”
  1. How do you balance working and school work?
“I study when I have to work. I study after every class and every night”
  1. What is the worst thing about being a CA?
“When you have to report an incident and telling people to be quite. Being mean”
  1. Do you feel that the responsibilities of being a CA hold you back from doing things that other students do like partying?
“In a way but not really, when you have a weekend off you can do anything you want”
  1. Are there any rules that you don’t enforce or are lenient on that you should be? Why is that?
She says that she is “lenient on the noise rule. I feel bad telling people to be quite when I’m the loudest on my floor. If people are being loud I tell them quite down not to stop talking”

I find it interesting that these two CA’s feel that they are close with their residents. I feel that I am not that close with my CA this year. I was closer with the CA I had last year. Something that they both mentioned was that the job does help with school work. CA #1 brought up the fact that the job helped her learn time management. As a resident, I like the fact that both CA’s became a CA to help people. They want to have conversations to their residents about problems. The equally say how much they don’t enjoy writing people up. Another thing is, they both are lenient on the “quite hours” rule. They understand that people are going to be talking in the halls and making new friends. CA #2 even brought up the point that she is the loudest in her hall, what gives her the right to tell others to be quite when she is the loud one.

3b.

CA #3

Male
Grade: Sophomore
  1. Years being a CA: 1st semester

  1. Why did you become a CA/What influenced you?
“All my friends were trying, so I figured that I would try with them. And I would be saving money.”
  1. Do you feel that you have a good communication with you residents? Why do you think that is?
“I would say most of them because I’m hanging with them in there room or they are in mine.” He said that he and his residents watch T.V or a movie.
  1. What do you think you gain for being a CA?
“You meet a lot of people more, you get better organization skills and leader skills”
  1. How do you balance working and school work?
“I just make sure I write down everything on sticky note (pints to desk) it helps me remember everything for school work and work.”
  1. What is the worst thing about being a CA?
“Having to tell people that your friends with to stop something. I’m fine with telling people that I’m not friends with.”
  1. Do you feel that the responsibilities of being a CA hold you back from doing things that other students do like partying?
“Yes. While I still do those things, I do it less often. It limits on how often. Instead of going out twice a weekend, I go out once every other weekend.”
  1. Are there any rules that you don’t enforce or are lenient on that you should be? Why is that?
One is the guests who aren’t registered because as long as they and their guests are behaving well I don’t have a problem. Drinking is another one. I drank my freshman year and that as long as they aren’t being disrupting or harmful to themselves I’m fine with it.”

CA #4

Male
Grade: Junior
  1. Years being a CA: 1 year

  1. Why did you become a CA/What influenced you?
“To help other people and the fact that it’s an on campus job.” He also added on “I also lived off campus and wanted to get back on.” I asked him why he wanted back on campus and he said it was because he could not afford paying rent and buying food.
  1. Do you feel that you have a good communication with you residents? Why do you think that is?
“I know everyone’s names and talk to them on a regular basics so I think that I have good communication.”
  1. What do you think you gain for being a CA?
“I meet lots of new people, it looks good on a resume and I get paid.”
  1. How do you balance working and school work?
“I make sure I get my school work done while everyone else is sleeping because most freshmen sleep till noon. That’s why I take 8am classes.”
  1. What is the worst thing about being a CA?
“Having to see people being self-disruptive and being stupid when they shouldn’t be. When I see people dressing as whores, I then cry for their parents’ sake.”
  1. Do you feel that the responsibilities of being a CA hold you back from doing things that other students do like partying?
“No because I never went to parties. It gives me an excuse to tell my friends that I can’t go out.”
  1. Are there any rules that you don’t enforce or are lenient on that you should be? Why is that?
“Quite hours. I make sure that people are quite enough that they don’t disturb others. If someone goes out to parties, as long as they stay inside there room, I leave them be.” He sums it up by saying “as long as they don’t act drunk.”

I thought that this was very interesting. Although it has its similarities to the two CA’s in Columbia, it definitely has its differences. For example CA #3 never said that he became a CA to help people when all the other three did. CA #4 not only wanted to help people but he wanted to live on campus again. That was something I never thought about or knew that you could do. Both CA’s talked about drinking and how if they don’t see it, they don’t report it. CA #3 told me that he himself asked all the other CA’s about drinking in Ewell Hall and they all said the same thing except the GHD (who is like the head CA of the hall).
